Why migrations go wrong

What can go wrong when a website moves

Most website moves look fine on the day. The damage shows up weeks later, as fewer calls and fewer enquiries. These are the problems we see most often when a business moves without a plan:

Lost Google rankings

What happens: Page addresses change and nothing points to the new ones. Google treats them as brand-new pages, and the rankings you built can drop.

What we do: Match every old address to its new page with a permanent (301) redirect.

Broken links and “page not found”

What happens: Links from Google, your Google Business Profile, directories and old social posts lead to error pages.

What we do: List every page Google and other sites link to, then test that each one lands on a live page.

Email stops working

What happens: Changing hosting or domain settings wipes your email records, so messages bounce or go missing.

What we do: Copy your email (MX) and other DNS records before anything switches, then test sending and receiving straight after.

Forms and tracking break quietly

What happens: Contact forms stop sending and Google Analytics stops counting, and nobody notices for weeks.

What we do: Test every form, call button, WhatsApp button and tracking tag before and after launch.

What we can move

Website migrations we handle

Whatever kind of move you’re making, the goal is the same: everything that works today should still work tomorrow.

Website wireframe turning into a finished design with a green tick

New hosting

Moving from a slow or expensive host to a faster one, with your site, files and database copied exactly.

New platform

Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy Website Builder, Weebly or an old custom site, moved to WordPress, which you own and can take anywhere.

New domain name

A rebrand or a new web address, with every old address redirected to its new page.

HTTP to HTTPS

An SSL certificate set up and every page moved to the secure address, so the padlock shows everywhere.

Redesign with new page addresses

A fresh design or a new page structure, without throwing away the pages that already rank.

Merging websites

Two or more websites combined into one, with every old address redirected to the right page.

Some builders, such as Wix, don’t let you export your website files. In that case we rebuild your pages on the new platform and copy your words, photos and settings across, keeping the same page addresses wherever we can.

Keeping your rankings

How we protect your Google rankings

Google ranks pages, not whole websites. Each page on your current site has built up trust over time, through its address, its content and the links pointing to it. A migration keeps that trust only if Google can follow every old page to its new home.

Google’s own advice for site moves: use permanent (301) redirects and keep them in place for at least a year.

Redirect map sending each old page address to its new address with a 301 redirect
What we keep the same
1

Page addresses, where possible. If an address doesn’t need to change, it doesn’t.

2

A 301 redirect for every one that does. Old page to the closest new page, one to one, never everything to the homepage.

3

The words that rank. Titles, headings and content on your best pages stay the same, unless you ask us to change them.

4

Your internal links. Menus and in-page links point straight to the new addresses, so nobody hits a chain of redirects.

How it works

How we move your website, step by step

Calendar and a rising path with three monthly milestones and a flag
1

Free migration check

Tell us what you’re moving. We look at your current site, hosting, domain and email, and tell you what could break.

2

Written plan and fixed quote

You get a short plan, the redirect map and one fixed price before any work starts.

3

Backup and set-up

We back up everything, then set up the site on its new home while your old site stays live.

4

Test before switch-over

We check pages, links, forms, email and speed on a private preview link, and you review it too.

5

Switch-over

We point your domain to the new site at a quiet time for your business and watch it go live.

6

Checks after launch

We monitor Search Console, test the redirects again and fix anything that shows up.

An honest note: even a careful migration can cause small ranking movements for a few weeks while Google re-reads your site. That’s normal. What we prevent is the big, lasting drop that comes from missing redirects and broken pages.

Why a quote and not a set price? Moving a 10-page website to a new host is a very different job from rebuilding a 300-product shop on a new platform. After your free check, you get one fixed price for your move, in writing.

Getting a new website from us? Moving your old pages and redirecting their addresses is part of the build. See website development in Adelaide or Melbourne.

Hosting: want us to host your website after the move? We can, and we’ll include it in your quote, so there’s no surprise bill later.

Speech bubbles with a question mark and a reply

Will I lose my Google rankings if I move my website?

Not if it’s done properly. Rankings drop when old page addresses stop working. We redirect every old address to its new page, keep your titles and content, and tell Google about the move in Search Console. Small movements for a few weeks are normal while Google re-reads the site; the big, lasting drops come from missing redirects, and that’s what we prevent.

We set up and test the new site while your old one stays live. On switch-over day we point your domain to the new site. That change can take from a few minutes to 48 hours to reach everyone, and during that time visitors see either the old site or the new one, not an error page.

Yes. Email runs on separate settings in your domain (called MX records). We copy them before anything changes and test sending and receiving straight after the switch. If your email is hosted with your old web host, we’ll tell you upfront and help you move it too.

Yes. These builders don’t let you take your full website with you, so we rebuild your pages on WordPress, copy your words and photos across, keep your page addresses where we can and redirect the rest. After that, you own your website and can host it anywhere.

It depends on the size of your site and the kind of move. A simple hosting move is quick; a platform change with dozens of pages takes longer, because the pages are rebuilt. You’ll get a timeline with your fixed quote.

Yes. We redirect every page on the old domain to the matching page on the new one, use the Change of Address tool in Google Search Console, and update the website link on your Google Business Profile. Keep the old domain renewed, so the redirects keep working.

Access to your current website, hosting and domain (we’ll show you how to add us as a user, so you don’t have to share passwords), and a quick chat about what you want to change. We handle the rest.

Yes. Your website and domain stay in your name, and you keep the logins.

No. Everything happens over video call, phone and WhatsApp, wherever you are in Australia.
